The "Incarnational" Mission
Our church began with the conviction that we’re not a church that exists for itself. Rather God’s given us a greater mission: To live and proclaim the good news of Jesus. Why? To reach our generation. God’s purpose for the world since sin has been to reconcile people to himself into a new community of love and peace (Acts 2:41-47; Rev 21). God’s called us because when we bring our people to Jesus, we are, in a sense, setting off dominoes in his grand purpose to redeem the largest community—the world (Acts 1:8).
What does this mean? When Jesus came to save us, he didn’t cling to his divine rights and comforts, but humbled himself by becoming human like us—even dying the death that was ours (Phil 2:6-8). God didn't simply invite us into his world and expect that we would get it; he came into our world and showed us in Jesus what the good news looks like in the flesh. This is the incarnation. In the same way, God’s asking us to (1) humbly get to know the people in our generation better and (2) lovingly reshape ourselves into a church that engages them on their terms so that they can come to know and grow in Jesus. The result could be a rather different church.
